some & any

Some, any, no es un post de este mismo blog en donde explicábamos el uso de some, de any y de no.

Vamos a proceder a profundizar un poco en el uso de some y de any.

Cuando queremos hablar de una cantidad indeterminada de un sustantivo incontable (azúcar, vino, agua, etc) con un verbo afirmativo utilizamos some.

     I managed to save some money last month.

     There's some sugar on the top shelf.

Cuando utilizamos un verbo en negativo, some se convierte en any.

     I didn't manage to save any money last month.

     There isn't any sugar on the top shelf.

     I don't have any beer left in the fridge.

     I don't want any ice in my gin.

Cuando formulamos alguna pregunta sobre un sustantivo incontable utilizamos any.

     Do you have any glue?

     Was there any snow in the mountains?

Con la excepción de que any se puede sustituir por some si estamos muy seguros de que la respuesta va a ser "sí".

     Would you like some tea?

     Would you care for some caviar?

     Do you feel like some coffe?

     Do you fancy some food?

     What about some champagne?

Quantity

Para expresar cantidad puedes usar:

• determiners: every, most, no
• quantifiers: all of, most of, none of

¿Qué expresión de cantidad usar?

1) Dependiendo en si el sustantivo es countable (C) o uncountable (U).

          There's far too much stuff (U) on the room.
          Not many of the people (C) I work with smoke.

    En ocasiones puedes usar la misma expresión de cantidad para ambos.

          He's got loads of money (U).
          I've got loads of coins (C) in my pocket.

2) Cuando hay un artículo (a, an, the), un pronombre posesivo (my, your, etc) o un pronombre demostrativo (that, these, etc) antes de un sustantivo, se utiliza una expresión de cantidad con of.

          Several of my friends live in small villages.
          (NOT Several my friends...)

          Most of the people in my neighbourhood go to work by car.
          (NOT Most of people...)

3) Cuando quieres hablar sobre pequeños números o cantidades puedes usar a few/a little para resaltar lo positivo (some) o few/little para resaltar lo negativo (not many/much).

          We did it because we wanted to have a little fun.
          Please hurry up! There's very little time.


¿Qué tiempo verbal usar?

Puedes usar un tiempo verbal singular si el sustantivo después de of es incontable o plural. Puedes usar un tiempo verbal plural si el sustantivo es plural.

         There's lots of traffic (U) in the centre.
         There are lots of tourists (C) in summer.

Some, Any, No

Some, any y no son usados con sustantivos incontables y sustantivos contables en plural.

     some water

     some potatoes

Some y sus compuestos (somebody, someone, something, somewhere, ...) son usados en oraciones afirmativas.

     Theres is some water left in the bottle.

También son usados en preguntas cuando esperamos una respuesta afirmativa, por ejemplo cuando ofrecemos o solicitamos algo.

     Would you like something to eat?

Any y sus compuestos (anybody, anyone, anything, anywhere, ...) son usados en preguntas.

     Has anyone seen Pat today?

También son usados con palabras negativas como without, never, rarely, ...

     I haver never met anyone like her before.

Cuando se usan en oraciones afirmativas hay una diferencia en el significado.

     We can go anywhere you like. (it doesn't matter where)

     Anyone could have told you that. (it doesn't matter who)

Not any se usa en oraciones negativas.

     There isn't any petrol in the tank.

No y sus compuestos (nobody, nothing, nowhere, ...) son usados en lugar de not any en oraciones negativas.

     Dora didn't do anything. (= she did nothing)

     There wasn't anybody there. (= there was nobody there)

Note: Usamos un verbo en singular con compuestos de some, any y no.

     There is nothing we can do.
