Both/Neither - All/None - Either

Both se refiere a dos personas, cosas o grupos. Tiene un significado positivo y está seguido por un verbo en plural.

          Both men used to live in Brighton.

Neither se refiere a dos personas, cosas o grupos. Tiene un significado negativo y está seguido por un sustantivo contable singular. Sin embargo, la estructura Neither of + plural noun phrase puede ir seguido por un verbo en singular o en plural (en afirmativo).

          Neither shop had the CD I was looking for.
          Neither of them has been to Paris before.

All se refiere a más de dos personas, cosas o grupos. Tiene un significado positivo y está seguido por un verbo en plural.

          All of the rooms have en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning.

Nota: Both/All pueden ir:
         (a) después del verbo to be -> They are both/all very tired.
         (b) después del verbo auxiliar y antes del verbo principal -> They have 
                  both/all been working very hard.

Whole es usado con sustantivos contables en singular pero no se usa con sustantivos incontables. Estructuras:

     a/the/this/my etc + whole + noun = all of + a/the/this/my etc + noun

          She ate the whole pizza.
          She ate all of the pizza.

          She spent all of her money.
          NOT: She spent the whole of her money.

     the whole + day/morning/week/year etc = All + 
     day/morning/week/year etc

          She's been working in the restaurant all morning.
          She's been working in the restaurant the whole morning.

None of se refiere a dos o más personas, cosas o grupos y tiene un significado negativo. Es usado con sustantivos o pronombres objeto y puede ir seguido tanto por un verbo en singular como en plural.

          None of the islands is/are inhabited.

Either se refiere a dos personas, cosas o grupos y  está seguido por un sustantivo contable singular . Sin embargo, la estructura Either of + plural noun phrase puede ir seguido tanto por un verbo en singular como en plural.

          Either dress is fine.
          Either of the dresses is/are fine.

Podemos usar not...either (of) en lugar de neither (of).

Either también puede ser usado al final de una oración negativa.

          "I have never seen Andy's flat." "I haver never seen it either."

Both...and es seguido por un verbo en plural.

          Both Rob and John go to the cafe every day.

Neither...nor/Either...or pueden ir seguidos tanto por un verbo en plural como en singular.

          Neither Italy nor Spain is/are going to sign the treaty.
