Abstract nouns

Los sustantivos abstractos son conceptos o ideas cuya existencia no podemos ver ni tocar como, por ejemplo, la paz o la justicia.

     Is long-term peace really viable in the Middle East?

     Justice and democracy are inseparable concepts.

     Pride is his worst enemy.   

Cuando hablamos de un ejemplo específico del concepto (o idea) o de un acontecimiento en particular, en este caso, es contable y lleva el artículo.

     I love the peace you find in the mountains.

     The success of the film  was undeniable.

     The love a mother feels for her children is unmatchable.

Al hilo de sustantivos abstractos y el uso del artículo the, queremos mencionar el caso de "las cosas". Cuando la palabra "cosas" en plural significa "asuntos" o "la situación" normalmente estamos hablando en general. Por lo tanto, cuando lo traducimos al inglés jamás debemos incluir el artículo. Veamos algunos ejemplos.

     The things are going well. ----------> Things are going well.

     The things will change someday. ---> Things will change someday.

     How are the things at work? --------> How are things at work?

     Are the things going well? ----- -----> Are things going well?

Near & Close to

Para decir en inglés "cerca de" se utiliza near.

     My uncle lives near the cathedral.

     Is there a post box near here?

     Is Birminghan near Manchester?

Ahora vamos a ver un sinónimo de near, dicho sinónimo es close to. Se utiliza más con verbos (close to + gerund) pero también puede utilizarse con sustantivos.

     Be careful, there's a cockroach close to your hand!

     You're very close to solving the problem.

     He's very close to being fired.

¿Cuántos sois? Somos cinco

La frase "somos cinco" no se traduce en inglés como we are five porque esta última frase significa "tenemos cinco años" sino que se traduce como there are five of us o lo que es lo mismo "hay cinco de nosotros".

Veamos diferentes ejemplos (tanto en afirmativo como la manera de preguntar cuántos sois o son).

     There were ten of them.

     There were four of us.

     There are two of them.

     There are six of us.

     There will be three of them.

     There will be five of us.

     How many of them are there?

     How many of you are there?

     How many of them will there be?

     How many of you will there be?

     How many of them were there be?

     How many of you were there be?

Without

without + gerund

     We left the restaurant without paying.

     Never cross the road without looking.

     She did it without realizing.

     I did it without thinking.
